Tyrann Mathieu's Final Heisman Run to New York

Carter "The Power" Bryant Saturday, December 10, 2011 , , , , , ,
Tyrann Mathieu had one of the most thrilling Heisman campaign pushes in the history of college football. If you don't believe me, just take a quick look below.

"The Honey Badger" started the season as the most explosive defensive player in college football. He was then "witheld from play" against Auburn and had a quiet five game stretch. But he then ended the season with a bang.

Mathieu scored two touchdowns on punt returns in as many games. Arkansas and Georgia couldn't stop "The Honey Badger." He nearly scored on a spectacular third, but was shoestringed tackled in the Georgia red zone.

I remember a few weeks ago when I spoke to Mathieu before the Arkansas game. He looked frustrated. Playmakers can get that way when they haven't been making big plays.

I asked him about his struggles versus the Razorbacks the year before. He was burned by Joe Adams on a fourth and three play that sealed the victory for the Hogs. I thought "The Honey Badger" was going to treat me like a cobra.

Instead he gave me a stare I will never forget.

LSU Needs Jordan Jefferson to Beat Alabama

LSU not only needs "swag" to beat Alabama, they need "Jefferswag."

Starting quarterback Jarrett Lee has been phenomenal. Thirteen touchdown passes and only one interception is quite a feat for a quarterback who used to have problems with throwing the football to the wrong team.

Lee has been the field general for this offense and continues to impress with his ability to throw the football on time. Since Jefferson's return to the team, he has been a force running the ball and has passed rather efficiently.

But this Alabama defense is a different animal. They do everything right. They don't miss tackles. When they do hit you, they make it count with bone crushing blows.

That's why LSU needs Jefferson.

The Most Dominant Player on LSU

7.

That number has been the most mind-blowing number this year for LSU football. It is the number of LSU do everything cornerback Tyrann Mathieu.

"The Honey Badger" received Heisman attention after a dominant start to the season. But after a below average performance versus Tennessee and being suspended "withheld from play" against Auburn, Mathieu has lost that luster.

There is no denial Mathieu has been an explosive playmaker for LSU. But the number on the back of Mathieu's jersey isn't the craziest number 7 that applies to LSU Football in 2011.

That number in the opening graph is referring to another player on LSU's team that Mathieu is heavily involved with for the Bayou Bengals. The "7" represents the number of punt return yards LSU has allowed this season through eight games.

The most dominant player on LSU's team this season is Australian punter Brad Wing.

LSU Players Crush Auburn Honey Bader-less

LSU vs. Auburn
"Freak" crushes Auburn QB Frazier for a sack.
Photo via Nola.com
Death Valley -- Death Valley almost lived up to it's literal name Saturday. With the way LSU hit Auburn players, it's a surprise nobody actually was sent to the morgue.

I'm not even kidding either.

LSU smashed the living day lights out of the Tigers from the Plains. They hit them really really really hard.

"When the other team is huffing and puffing, we want to hit you that much harder," said cornerback Ron Brooks after the game.

The LSU defense and special teams unit, despite being Honey Bader-less, had another impressive outing against a SEC offense. But LSU did it with more emphasis on Saturday than they have all season. LSU was wearing their Pro Combat Uniforms. It would have been easy to confuse the Bayou Bengals for a NFL team.

But forget about the numbers, the purple and gold Tigers crushed their mascot counterparts with vicious hits all game long. Defensive end Barkevious Mingo tallied two sacks, tying him for the team lead of four sacks for the season. Both times he had clear paths to the quarterbacks because of his speed.

"Our speed made up for some mistakes we made today," said Mingo. "Our coaches feel comfortable with our ability to make plays."

But highlight hit of the day came from an offensive player. LSU true freshman receiver Jarvis Landry hasn't had much playing time at his position this season. But he showed his athleticism on kickoff team against Onterrio McCalebb, who scored the game winning touchdown versus LSU last year.

Sit back and enjoy folks!

Auburn Wins First BCS Title, But Was Dyer Down?

Carter "The Power" Bryant Monday, January 10, 2011 , , , , , , ,
Auburn finally earned their first crystal ball after an undefeated season.

The Tigers defeated the Oregon Ducks 22-19 in one of the best National Championship games in the sport's history Monday night.

But did the heavily criticized Big Ten officiating crew make a mistake on the game's most controversial play?

Freshman running back Michael Dyer, as I predicted before the game (shameless promotion), played the game of his life. His long runs on the game's final drive proved to be the difference for the Tigers. But was he down on his 37 yard scamper deep into Oregon territory?

MockSession.com investigated the run with this in-depth video....

What do you guys think? Was he down? Was Arkansas tight end D.J. Williams down?

HKT would love to hear your thoughts. Not like there isn't enough drama going on in the SEC or anything.

BCS National Championship Prediction

Fairley will pile-drive the opponent.
Photo via jaygtate.blogspot.com
The game is only a few hours away, but here a few thoughts and a prediction for the BCS National Championship Game...

The game needs to be moved before NFL wildcard weekend.

There is little doubt in my mind that the game has lost a little bit of its luster now that the game will be played after a spectacular weekend in NFL games.

And this game has been dragged on for too long. I can't count how many times I've heard players complaining that the game can't come soon enough.

LET'S PLAY FOOTBALL ALREADY!!!

Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley is being overhyped for this game.

There is A TON going on in the world of LSU Sports. Here is the latest...

Sports by Brooks reports that Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon's private jet is in Dallas. Miles will be back in Dallas on Tuesday.

The Big Lead writes Brandon will learn the hard way that Michigan football is not what it used to be.

Ben Love of Tiger Rag reports men's basketball forward Dennis Harris has been dismissed from the team because of violation of team rules.

The men's basketball team only allowed six first half points in their SEC opener versus Auburn. LSU moved to 9-7 overall, 1-0 in conference.

Peterson Rakes In Postseason Awards

PP7 carried the LSU offense to begin the year on ST

LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson has swag, a lucrative professional football future and some serious speed. Peterson was phenominal for the Bayou Bengals this season.

But he now has some serious hardware to show for it.

Peterson was named the SEC Defensive and SEC Special Teams Player of the Year earlier this week. Tonight, he won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back and also won the Chuck Bednarik Award for the nations best defensive player at the College Football Awards on ESPN.

PP7 was the first defensive back to win the award since Charles Woodson won it in 1997.

Peterson, who never fails to come up with a great quote, said in his acceptance speech that he knew a Tiger had to win in it. Auburn's Nick Fairley and Clemson's Da'Quan Bowers were the other nominees, both teams playing on teams who's team mascot is a Tiger.

LSU head coach Les Miles was in Orlando to support Peterson at the awards show. Auburn's Cameron Newton also won multiple awards tonight, including the Maxwell Award for the nation's best all-around player.

Hide ya kids, Hide ya wife people, PP7 lived up to his preseason hype.

My Take on Newton ALLEGATIONS

Carter "The Power" Bryant Tuesday, November 9, 2010 , ,
Newton deserves the Heisman. Period.
Photo via al.com
Notice I capitalize the word ALLEGATIONS. And notice I just capitalized the word in my last sentence.

In this country, we are innocent until PROVEN guilty. That means clear, objective evidence. So for you LSU fans that believe these allegations will magically vacate Auburn's victories this year and push LSU higher in the rankings.

I don't cover Auburn for a living nor do I know much about this situation. But here are two people you need to listen to for a clear view on the story:

Defending Cameron Newton -- LSU vs Auburn Prediction

Carter "The Power" Bryant Friday, October 22, 2010 , , , , , , , ,
Is Newton the best player in college football?
Photo via BleacherReport
LSU has faced their fare share of mobile quarterbacks this season and have superb in defending them. But when the Tigers face the Tigers, they will be facing a whole new animal.

Cameron Newton is "not your average" quarterback. Many thought another Tim Tebow wouldn't come for at least a decade, but college football fans are seeing that Newton is special.

LSU's "not your average" cornerback Patrick Peterson knows is too.

"6-6. He's running about... I'm going to say a 4.4 (forty-yard dash), strong arm. What else can you say?"

LSU vs Auburn Preview -- Bayou Bengals Thoughts on Cam Newton

Carter "The Power" Bryant Monday, October 18, 2010 , , , , , ,
On Saturday, the LSU defense will have their hands full with Heisman candidate Cam Newton. LSU have had success defending mobile quarterbacks, so this week at HKT we will break down those games and what the Bayou Bengals need to do to shut down the hottest player in college football.

Here are Patrick Peterson, Jarrett Lee and Stevan Ridley's thoughts on Newton. Later this week I will share what Kelvin Sheppard, who many consider the quarterback of the defense, thinks about the gunslinger. (Or you can visit the YouTube page and watch it now.)

LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson talks about the LSU secondary and Auburn Heisman hopeful Cam Newton.

LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee talks about what makes Auburn quarterback Cam Newton special.

LSU running back Stevan Ridley talks about Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and getting ready to play in the plains.

Three Things to Look For -- LSU vs McNeese State Prediction

LSU place kicker Josh Jasper (30) runs five yards for a first down after a faked field goal attempt in the second half with Florida's cornerback Janoris Jenkins (1) and Florida safety Ahmad Black (35) unable to stop him during an NCAA college football game in Gainesville, Fla., Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010. LSU defeated Florida 33-29.

LSU Football is undefeated. They played two of the best games of the SEC season over in as many weeks and now has received much national attention.

But the national media aren't sold on the Tigers as a real national title contender because of how they have been winning. Yet if LSU remain unblemished, they will remain in the Top 10 of all polls.

LSU welcomes in the 2-3 McNeese State Cowboys to Tiger Stadium. Here are three things to look for...
